Summary

The IHF School Kolcondo Campus by It’s Humanity Foundation (IHF) is a groundbreaking initiative transforming lives in the remote island community of Kolcondo Char, Rangpur, Bangladesh. Launched in January 2022, the school addresses critical issues of educational exclusion, digital inaccessibility, and generational poverty in a region where nearly 70% of families lack access to technology and education drop-out rates remain alarmingly high. What sets this initiative apart is its integrated, human-centric approach. Beyond free, quality education for over 600 children from marginalized communities till date, IHF connects learning with livelihoods and life skills. Through projects like duck farming, mushroom cultivation, tree plantation, youth vocational training, and craft entrepreneurship programs for women, the initiative builds holistic resilience. By engaging families, corporate/ individual partners, and local community members, IHF ensures that development is inclusive and sustainable. Infrastructure like tube wells and sanitary washrooms are co-designed with community input, ensuring ownership and long-term maintenance. The initiative has become a model for grassroots transformation—empowering individuals, uplifting communities, and building self-sustaining futures. IHF School, Kolcondo Campus is not just a school; it is a movement of education, dignity, and opportunity.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

In the remote char island of Kolcondo, Rangpur—nearly 400 km from Dhaka—education was once a distant dream. Families faced muddy tracks, river crossings, and two-hour bullock cart journeys just to reach the nearest school. As a result, many children dropped out, trapped in a cycle of poverty and inaccessibility.

That began to change in 2010, when It’s Humanity Foundation (IHF) was born in a tiny Syedpur balcony with just 17 students. Guided by the belief that every child matters, IHF grew steadily, turning a modest vision into 14 schools across 7 districts, educating over 4,500 students till date.

In 2021, IHF opened its Kolcondo Campus, serving a community of over 600 families that had long been denied access to basic education, healthcare, and sanitation. Till date, more than 600 children attend the school, benefiting from free education, digital learning, nutritious meals, libraries, science fairs, and health campaigns.

But IHF’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. Through programs in livelihood development, youth engagement, and women’s empowerment, entire families are rising. Parents now run sustainable ventures—like duck farming and craft-making—while their children thrive in school.

One Kolcondo mother shared how her daughter no longer walks hours to attend class—she now learns, laughs, and leads. IHF didn’t just build a school; it built a bridge—over barriers of hardship, isolation, and hopelessness.

From a small balcony in Syedpur to a thriving school in Kolcondo, IHF’s journey is a reflection of resilience, dignity, and the boundless power of belief.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

At It’s Humanity Foundation (IHF), one of our greatest lessons has been the power of co-creation with the community. Sustainable change does not come from top-down interventions rather it emerges when you involve the people you’re trying to serve from the very beginning. Whether in designing a classroom, planning a training program, or setting up a water point, local voices shaped our approach and it helped us along the way.

We also learned that education cannot be separated from livelihood, health, or dignity and they all are interconnected. Children cannot thrive in school if their families go hungry or if clean water is a distant luxury. This realization pushed us to embrace a more holistic model—integrating education with vocational training, women’s empowerment, youth development and community infrastructure.

Our journey—from a balcony in Syedpur to such remote char islands like Kolcondo—taught us that impact scales not with budget, but with belief, consistency, and local ownership. Our advice would be to Start small, but go deep. Don’t be afraid to dream big but make sure you always prioritize the community trust. Empower your team, invest in grassroots leadership, and design for long-term transfer of ownership to the communities themselves.

Above all, we always need to remember that big transformation takes time—but the first step is always showing up with heart and purpose. The rest will follow.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

It’s Humanity Foundation visions to launch its most transformative initiative yet—the IHF Multipurpose Complex in the heart of Kolcondo, a remote, climate-vulnerable char in Rangpur. Kolcondo has already witnessed what change looks like: where once children traveled two hours by bullock cart for school, now learn safely in their own community. The next chapter builds on this momentum—with a vision rooted in resilience, inclusion, and opportunity.

This climate-resilient complex will serve as an education center, disaster shelter, healthcare facility, and training institute—all under one roof. It will ensure uninterrupted learning for 1,000+ students in three years, offer shelter and emergency aid for 2,200+ people annually, and provide vocational training to over 600+ youth and 750+ entrepreneurs in sustainable trades like mushroom and cheese farming.

Health access will be revolutionized with a dedicated unit for mothers and newborns, reaching 1,600+ residents, while 800+ elders will gain essential literacy and numeracy skills to navigate daily life with confidence. Powered by renewable energy, the complex will also serve as a living model for green innovation and environmental stewardship.

This will be more than infrastructure—it’s a movement for dignity. For IHF, the future lies in scaling this integrated model across Bangladesh, proving that real transformation starts where others often stop looking. The IHF Multipurpose Complex isn’t just a next step—it’s the embodiment of our belief: that every life, no matter how remote, holds the power to rise, lead, and inspire change.
