Summary

“Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles.” – Gu Wanyu (1613 – 1682.) As an educational institution with a concrete strategy of international engagement, Fuzhou Melbourne Polytechnic (FMP) embodies Gu Wanyu’s aphorism. Through engagement with the international community, FMP aims to train students not only through academic excellence, but with an authentic ‘international vision.’ FMP is a Sino-foreign cooperative institute, between Minjiang University and Melbourne Polytechnic in Australia. To facilitate international engagement, FMP has established cooperative relationships not just with Melbourne Polytechnic, but with universities and colleges all over the globe. FMP has facilitated overseas study and exchange for hundreds of graduates. Our students perform well in competitions and events with an international focus. Gu Wanyu is also known for his statement: ‘The fate of the nation is the business of all.’ We contend that international engagement in education, and in personal and professional development is key to guaranteeing prosperity and giving back to community and society. With this in mind, we are deliberately aligned with internationally-oriented development programs at a local, provincial, and national level, such as the ‘Belt and Road’ and ‘Maritime Silk Road Fuzhou.’

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

On 28 March, 2015, a delegation from Tasmania visited Minjiang University. Among them was FMP alumnus Xu Zhe, and the Premier of Tasmania, Will Hodgman. Xu was returning to his alma mater, through which he was able to study at the University of Tasmania where he obtained a master’s degree.

In Australia, Xu has been active in the China-Australia relationship, co-writing a book with a well-known Australian historian entitled Showcasing Tasmania and the connection to Fujian China. In 2014, Xu Zhe was recognised for his contributions to the China-Australia relationship when President Xi Jinping visited Australia and Xu was invited to a state banquet, which he described adroitly as ‘close contact with our former Principal.’ After this event, Xu made the following comments:

‘I am sincerely grateful for the Sino-foreign cooperative platform. … Its internationalised teaching mode helped me adapt to overseas life, complete my studies, [and] successfully gain a decent job. The honour of meeting [President Xi] belongs to my alma mater and the influence it had on me.’

Xu is also chairman of the Australian Alumni association. When he was appointed, he quoted a Chinese expression: ‘Those who drink water cherish its source, and those who complete study feel grateful to their teacher.’ and remarked that he would spare no effort to welcome his fellow graduates and contribute to the advancement of FMP.

Xu continues to be active in China-Australia relations, He presently works in a director role cultivating opportunities for international engagement between Tasmania and China.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Much of our learnings pertaining to our concept of engagement were specific to the Chinese context, but we should emphasise the importance of open-mindedness, diligence and flexibility when pursuing a program of international engagement. An institution must be prepared to accommodate and understand different perspectives, and to prepare students and educators accordingly.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

FMP is committed to continuing its association and collaboration with Melbourne Polytechnic and staying true to the original aim of cultivating qualified talent to meet the needs of society; namely, “internationally-minded, high-quality technical and skilled talents who are capable of communicating in both Chinese and English, familiar with the internationally accepted rules in their respective professional fields, and well-rounded in terms of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor-related qualities.”

We will continue to develop our “five key elements” of training - high-standard programs, high-quality courses, an excellent faculty, top-tier training centres, and premium teaching materials. In this fashion, we intend to become a benchmark for higher vocational Sino-foreign cooperative education, playing an exemplary and leading role, and providing talent support for the industrial upgrading and high-quality economic and social development of Fujian's regional economy.

We hope to continue to deepen our ties with institutions abroad and ensure that many more students enjoy the opportunity to travel and study overseas. It is our goal to continue introducing advanced vocational teaching resources and concepts, and to develop the vocational educational system more broadly with the characteristics that we have helped to define.
