Summary

The Euromed University of Fes (UEMF) is a leading institution located in Morocco, serving as a hub for innovation, dialogue, and collaboration across the Euro-Mediterranean region. Its mission aligns with fostering intercultural understanding, sustainable development, and the integration of diverse knowledge systems. The creation of UEMF stems from a Royal Initiative, with the objective of establishing in Fes a platform for intercultural dialogue, exchange, and cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, with a natural extension to sub-Saharan Africa. UEMF is a non-profit Foundation endowed with Public Utility status and is labeled by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), supported by its 43 member countries. It is placed under the High Honorary Presidency of His Majesty the King, Mohammed VI, and recognized by the Moroccan State. All its curricula have been fully accredited. Among its flagship initiatives, the establishment of the Chair on the Alliance of Civilizations, in partnership with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), stands out. This initiative promotes intercultural dialogue, research, and education on critical global challenges. The direct beneficiaries include students, academics, policymakers, and civil society organizations engaged in advancing cross-cultural understanding and peacebuilding. Key objectives include: • Enhancing the capacities of young leaders in conflict resolution and cultural diplomacy. • Strengthening research on pressing global issues such as migration, climate change, and sustainable development. • Facilitating regional and international partnerships to address shared challenges.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Impacting Lives Through Trust, Dialogue, and Global Citizenship

The Alliance of Civilizations initiative at UEMF has redefined the role of universities in conflict transformation. What began with the 9th Global Forum in 2022, bringing together over 300 youth from 98 nationalities, evolved into a long-term academic and civic commitment. Many of the participants, coming from regions affected by war or exclusion, found in UEMF a space where they could speak and belong. The event was more than a forum—it was a gateway to personal transformation and global engagement.

Building on this, UEMF launched a Master’s in Conflict Management and the Alliance of Civilizations and a Doctoral Program that attracts students from over 20 nationalities. These academic tracks equip young leaders with the skills and values to become peacebuilders in their communities.

In 2024, UEMF organized the First and Second Summits of African and Euro-Mediterranean Youth, in Rabat and Fez respectively. These summits gathered over 200 students and were supported by high-level governmental and parliamentary institutions. Students explored themes like forced migration, intercultural identity, climate change, and trust-building, with guidance from global experts and scholars of the UNAOC Chair.

Through plenary sessions, publications, and community dialogue, UEMF has not only built bridges but also fostered a generation determined to act with purpose, resilience, and compassion.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

“Trust as a Cornerstone: Lessons from Fez”

From the outset, UEMF understood that rebuilding trust requires more than idealism—it demands structure, consistency, and inclusive governance. Three key insights guide our leadership model:

Intercultural dialogue must be institutionalized—through chairs, curricula, and events—to ensure it persists beyond symbolic gestures.

Youth leadership is not an accessory; it is central. By involving students in research, publication, and diplomacy, we shift from token participation to authentic engagement.

Resilience comes from shared narratives. By placing historical pluralism and Moroccan traditions of coexistence at the core of our mission, UEMF offers a living model of harmony in diversity.

To any institution aspiring to contribute to peacebuilding: invest in people, partner across borders, and preserve hope through education.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Expanding the Impact of the UNAOC Chair at UEMF

Building on the success of the Alliance of Civilizations Chair, the Euromed University of Fes (UEMF) envisions several key initiatives to deepen its global engagement and educational mission:

Institutionalization of the Annual Youth Summits: Following the success of the first two editions held in Rabat and Fez in 2024, UEMF plans to make the African and Euro-Mediterranean Youth Summits a permanent fixture, with annual editions fostering intercontinental dialogue on peace, migration, environment, and digital ethicsLivret UNCAC 2025.

Strengthening Academic Programs and Doctoral Research: The Master's program in Conflict Management and the Alliance of Civilizations, currently welcoming students from over 20 nationalities, will be expanded with additional interdisciplinary modules and closer ties to the UNAOC. The associated Doctoral School will support more candidates in critical areas such as diplomacy, intercultural governance, and global justiceLivret UNCAC 2025.

Publishing and Global Knowledge Dissemination: UEMF will amplify the reach of its academic journals (e.g. Médiations Méditerranéennes, Alternatives Africaines, International Journal of European, Mediterranean and African Studies) and pedagogical book series, in partnership with L’Harmattan and other global publishers. These publications reflect the Chair’s role as a space for critical thinking and intercultural innovationLivret UNCAC 2025.

Engaging Stakeholders Through International Forums: Building on the December 2024 conferences and the 9th and 10th UNAOC Forums, UEMF will continue organizing high-level international events gathering diplomats, scholars, parliamentarians, and civil society actors to advance the values of peace, trust, and pluralismLivret UNCAC 2025.

Expanding the Global Network of the Chair: With 60 members from all continents, the Chair will continue to expand its advisory and academic network to promote mutual understanding and soft diplomacy, especially across Africa, the Mediterranean, and EuropeLivret UNCAC 2025.

These future initiatives are rooted in the university’s core mission—to form globally aware citizens and equip them with the tools to build a more just, inclusive, and peaceful world. Guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and aligned with the principles of the United Nations and the Union for the Mediterranean, UEMF stands as a model for intercultural education in the 21st century.
